What is Paint Correction & Why is it Important

What is Paint Correction?

Paint correction is the method that car detailers use to restore a vehicle’s paintwork to its original or nearly original state. Over time, external factors and wear and tear can leave imperfections like scratches, swirl marks, oxidation, and water spots on a car’s paint. This method aims to rectify these imperfections by carefully removing layers of clear coat or paint using machine polishing techniques, specialized abrasive compounds, and pads. Professional auto detailers assess the paint’s condition and employ various abrasive products and tools to smoothen imperfections. When executed with precision, paint correction enhances the paint’s clarity, depth, and overall appearance, resulting in a glossier, more vibrant finish that revitalizes a vehicle’s aesthetic appeal and value.

How Do You Know If Your Vehicle Needs Paint Correction?

Scratches and Swirl Marks

Scratches and swirl marks on car paint often result from improper washing techniques such as hand washing a car with a t-shirt or taking your car to a car wash. Car washes are one of the most common causes of scratches and swirl marks due to the abrasive texture of their brushes and automatic washing materials. They can appear on the paints surface due to regular wear and tear from driving through areas with harsh environmental factors such as dirt or rocky roads as well. These marks can cause the paint to lose its original shine and clarity.

Excessive Use

Vehicles that require heavy use, such as daily commutes or frequent long drives, are more prone to accumulating paint imperfections. This is because the vehicle is constantly exposed to road debris, dust, and pollutants which gradually damage the paint, leading to scratches and surface abrasions.

Vehicle Sitting Out in the Sun

A lot of people don’t have access to a garage or an area where their car can be protected from the suns vicious heat. Extended exposure to sunlight and UV rays can cause paint oxidation, leading to a faded and dull appearance. UV rays break down the paint’s protective layers, making it susceptible to damage and diminishing its color vibrancy over time. This exposure can also cause clear coat deterioration and may result in a chalky or rough texture on the paint surface.

Neglected Maintenance

A lack of regular cleaning, waxing, or detailing can contribute to the accumulation of contaminants on the paint surface. These contaminants, including dirt, tar, bird droppings, and tree sap, can etch into the paint, resulting in blemishes and imperfections.

2 Types of Paint Correction

What is a 1 Step Paint Correction?

When it comes to car detailing, the best detailers will recommend you services that suit your needs. If your scratches and swirls on your paint are not very severe, then a 1 step paint correction would suit your needs. A 1 step paint correction just involves applying a corrective polish to the vehicle’s paintwork. This is done using a polisher and requires skill and precision. Paint polish is slightly abrasive which makes it capable of removing scratches . Polish has the ability to wear down the uneven surface of the clear coat, effectively diminishing or eliminating the appearance of scratches and swirls. If you keep your car in relatively decent condition then a 1 step paint correction should be enough for an auto detailer to restore your paint’s clarity.

What is a 2 Step Paint Correction?

A 2 step paint correction is a more complex process that takes longer than a 1 step. This involves applying a cutting compound to the paint first to remove more noticeable and severe scratches from the paintwork using a polisher. A cutting compound is simply a more abrasive product that cuts deeper into the paint clear coat which is what allows it to remove more scratches and swirls. This is then followed up with applying a polish to the paint which then restores the vibrant shine and clarity. The whole point of a 2 step paint correction is to remove as many scratches as a detailer can from the clear coat. This is a more difficult process that requires a very keen eye along with the proper tools and experience. A 2 step paint correction will cost a lot more than a 1 step and usually is done in an auto detailing shop. This can be done by a mobile detailer however environmental conditions must be optimal for this to effectively remove the paint scratches
